TURNTABLE INSTALLATION KITS

Five sizes of Installation Kit module are available:

TIM1 300mm x 300mm   -  Used with multi-scale turntable kits.  This forms an integral part of

the appropriate turntable kit, and is therefore not available separately.

TIM2 500mm x 500mm   - Required for 0 gauge turntables up to 50 foot (15,3m) scale diameter.

TIM3 600mm x 600mm   - Required for 0 gauge turntables in excess of 50 foot (15,3m) scale diameter.

TIM4 800mm x 800mm  - Required for all Gauge 1 turntables up to 70 foot (21,4m) scale diameter.

TIM5 300mm x 300mm - Required for all 4mm scale turntables.

The kits comprise three boards, arranged as follows: The upper board has a hole of the appropriate diameter cut centrally, to form the rim of the well. The centre board has a smaller diameter cut-out, and this forms the rail shelf to which is fixed the circular race rail on which the turntable rotates. This rail is split across its diameter to allow for electrical pick-up via the turntable wheels, and is laid using the radius gauge supplied with the turntable. The lower board, which forms the base of the well, carries the centre pivot bearing. A plywood disk forms the concave floor of the well. The boards are separated by a series of threaded brass spacers, and are held rigidly together by locating the screws provided into a circle of pre-drilled holes.

The large diameter disc, which is removed by the hole-cutting process, is also included. This is used as one of the drive components, in conjunction with Motor Unit MU6.

Since turntables are often located in inaccessible corners of the layout, this method of construction enables the whole turntable well to be assembled and tested "off-site" then positioned into the layout as a completed unit. It will be found much more convenient to locate a square section into the layout than to cut accurately a hole of precise diameter in the baseboard surface.

The kit contains the basic requirements for constructing the well. All other parts required for installation - centre shaft, bearings, drive hubs etc. - are supplied with the turntable kit. Further detailing, such as representation of brickwork or stonework, and provision of walkways around the rim of the well, are to be provided by the modeller after installation.

Note. GWR over-girder turntables are surface mounted, in a very shallow well. Therefore no sidewalls are provided.
